iOS, by default, does not allow you to select any custom ringtone on your iPhone. All you can do is scroll through the built-in options. Setting Any Song as Ringtone on Your iPhone
To set a custom ringtone on iPhone, you need to have iTunes on your computer. So if you don’t have iTunes, make sure you install the latest version. After installing / updating iTunes, you can proceed with the steps below. Keep in mind that the procedure is quite a time consuming and can be tedious.
Step 1- Add your Song to the iTunes Library
To get started, make sure the song you want to set as a ringtone is in your iTunes library. If you’ve already downloaded an MP3 or AAC ringtone to your computer, all you need to do is:
Go to Library> Songs. Click the file in the upper left corner and select “Add file to library.” Select an MP3 or AAC ring file from your drive.
Step 2- Trim the Sound in iTunes
Once an audio file has been added to your iTunes library, you can select when to start and stop the ringtone using the steps below.
- Right-click a song in your iTunes library.
- Click on Song Information. When a new window opens, click the Options tab.
- Check the start and stop boxes here and set the desired times for the ringtone.
Note: The ringtone length can be a maximum of 30 seconds.
Step 3- Create an AAC version
You will now need to create an AAC version of the ringtone. The same can be done using the convert option in iTunes. Click a song to select it. Then tap File in the upper left corner and select Convert. Touch “Create AAC Version.” You will now see a duplicate file with the same name in your library. You can now delete the older MP3 version if you wish.
Not sure which of these two versions of AAC is? Right-click on the song> File Information> File and check the file type. Furthermore, if you do not see the option to create an AAC version, click the Edit menu> Settings> Import settings and change the “Import Using” option to “AAC encoding”.
Step 4- Change the Extension
Now you need to change the song extension from m4a to m4r. To do the same:
Right-click a song on iTunes. Click on ‘Show in Windows Explorer’. Now right-click the file, click Rename and change it from “XYZ.m4a” to “XYZ.m4r”, where XYZ is the name of your song file. Click on Yes to confirm when prompted.
Can’t see or change file extensions on a Windows 10 or Windows 8 computer? Open Explorer, click the ‘View’ tab at the top, and select the ‘File name extensions’ checkbox.
Step 5- Import and Sync a Ringtone to Your iPhone
After completing all the above steps, connect your iPhone to your computer using a USB cable. If it’s in Windows 10, you’ll need to tap “Trust this computer” and enter a passcode when prompted on your iPhone. Now follow the steps below in iTunes:
- Click the “Devices” icon, as shown in the screenshot above. Once your phone window opens, click Tones under “On my device.”
- Now return to Explorer, where your ringtone.m4r is present. Please select a file, press Ctrl + C to copy and paste it by pressing Ctrl + V in iTunes on the Tones tab. You can also drag the file directly to iTunes. Step 6- Select a ringtone on your iPhone.
- The ringtone is now synced to your iPhone. To set the same as your favorite ringtone: Open the settings on your iPhone. Go to Sound and Haptics. Scroll down and click Ringtone. Now select the custom ringtone you just synced using iTunes.
